What is carcinoma?
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of cancer of both the skin and eyelid, and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common. Both types are usually caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun.
BCC does not spread to distant parts of the body like some other cancers, but if left untreated it can grow larger and damage important structures around the eye. SCC is more aggressive and can spread to other areas of the body.
How is it treated?
Treatment is by excision. Small tumours can be excised in our procedure room. Larger tumours are removed in day theatre under local anaesthesia, with intravenous sedation to make you more comfortable.
