What’s New: Glaucoma

What’s New in Glaucoma Management
at The Eye Centre?

We are excited to introduce new glaucoma treatment modalities that are now available at The Eye Centre.

SELECTIVE LASER TRABECULOPLASTY (SLT)

Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a laser procedure that lowers the intraocular pressure in specific cases of glaucoma, e.g. when the medications do not lower the pressure enough or cause serious side effects. It can also be used as first-line therapy in some patients. It has been in use for over 25 years worldwide.

MIGS (MINIMALLY INVASIVE GLAUCOMA SURGERY)

While effective, traditional glaucoma surgeries (such as trabeculectomy or tube shunt) can have unpredictable healing and risk. When combined with cataract surgery, these procedures can also induce unplanned astigmatism and delayed visual recovery, which can be frustrating for both the patient and surgeon. Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) was developed to reduce some of the complications associated with conventional glaucoma surgery. These procedures are usually performed at the same time as cataract surgery, using microscopic incisions and equipment. We utilise one of two different implants:

iStent® inject

This microscopic stent is injected into the main drainage channel of the eye (the trabecular meshwork) at the end of the cataract operation. A permanent opening is created between the front of the eye and its natural drainage pathway. This reduces the pressure on the eye by improving the natural outflow of fluid from the eye.

Xen® Gel Stent

The XEN Gel Stent is a surgical implant designed to lower intraocular pressure in open-angle glaucoma patients, where previous surgical treatment has failed and/or medications alone were insufficient (also known as refractory glaucoma). The microscopic tube (about the length of an eyelash) is made from gelatin and becomes soft and flexible once it is injected into the eye. It creates a small channel in the eye to drain fluid and reduce the pressure on the eye.
