Blepharoplasty is a procedure performed on the eyelids to refresh the eyes and give a more youthful appearance. It may also improve eyesight as excess eyelid skin which might be obstructing peripheral vision is removed. With age, eyelid skin loosens and sags, and the fat that supports and surrounds the eye prolapses forward. This produces puffiness (eye bags) and wrinkles.

Upper eyelid surgery involves the removal of excess eyelid skin and prolapsed orbital fat and formation or reformation of the upper eyelid fold. Medical aid/insurance will cover upper eyelid reduction if the excess skin obscures your vision.

Lower eyelid surgery involves removal of excess skin and prolapsed fat. Bulging lower eyelid fat can also be repositioned to fill a tear trough deformity (hollowness above sunken cheeks) during this procedure, thus rejuvenating the mid-face.

Surgery is performed under local anaesthesia with light intravenous sedation for two eyelids, or general anaesthesia for more prolonged procedures such as upper and lower blepharoplasties. Recovery time is brief and bruising minimal for most patients.
